REVIEW: Star Wars Resistance: "Kaz's Curse"
Much like the past couple months of Resistance, this episode, "Kaz's Curse," had moments that I liked, moments that I disliked, and overall felt like a waste of an episode.
The whole premise of the episode is that a pirate places a "curse" on Kaz, and him having to deal with all of the bad luck that he gets stuck with as a result.
That setup is the majority of the episode. Spoiler alert, he wasn't cursed. It was all in his head. He needed to realize that he is in control of his own destiny. That's a nice message and all, but how about do another story that reflects that...such as, oh, I don't know, the idea of Tam and Kaz choosing their paths and reflecting on their choices, both good and bad.
Instead, the majority of the episode sees Kaz getting abused but a string of bad luck over and over again, and to me, it got very old, very fast. It made me wonder why this was the premise for an episode in a final season, in a show I remind you only has two seasons.
The b-plot of the episode involves the Colossus going through an asteroid field trying to escape the Guavian Death Gang. I wish this subplot would have been the focus of the whole episode, making it more tense and action-packed.
That being said, the final action sequence is really well animated, has good action, and shows how far the Aces have come as far as fighting together as a competent fighting force.
Overall, I liked the subplot, and I liked the interactions between Kaz and Mika Grey, but I felt like this episode can be skipped, and has no real impact on the show, unless the Guavian Death Gang alerts the First Order.
I feel like I'm beating on a dead horse, but come on, how many filler episodes are we going to get this season? Again, this is the final season. For all of its faults in the first half, the final season of Rebels really didn't have any filler episodes, so why this many for Resistance, when there is so much you can explore with the characters and state of the galaxy?
