DISCUSSION: SWC 2019 Clone Wars trailer

It was a massive, pleasant surprise to find out last year that the Clone Wars would receive an additional 12 episodes on Disney + to properly finish and give closure to the series. While I would have liked to have received more episodes to tell every story Dave Filoni and his team originally wanted to tell, I'm still grateful the show will receive a proper finale, the way he wanted it to end.

As such, during Star Wars celebration a few weeks ago, we saw the trailer for the new season, and some of the stories that we are in for, both I expected and didn't expect.

One of the story arcs this season will see Ahsoka not too long after she left the Jedi Order in season five, forced to live in the lower levels of Coruscant without her lightsabers, and without referring to her past as a Jedi. From what we see from the trailer, it appears Ahsoka will befriend a pair of twins and get involved in an adventure with them dealing with the criminal underworld.

This setup is loosely based on a story arc that was supposed to be in the show, although instead of Ahsoka befriending, and having feelings for a young man, she gets involved with two twin girls...though if they want to be progressive with the romance...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how Ahsoka adapts to her new life, and how she survives in a world completely different than she has experienced. In the trailer, we see shots of Mandalorian Bo-Katan, which makes me believe that this story arc will lead to another story arc.

And that would be her recruiting Ahsoka, and by extension, the Republic, to help liberate Mandalore from the control of Darth Maul. This was intended to be the final arc of the show, connecting and crossing into Revenge of the Sith. I already know a basic outline of how this arc will go, considering I read the book Ahsoka. Still, I can't wait to see how the story enfolds, especially seeing how Ahsoka will reunite with Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Rex.

Also, we see Anakin return her lost lightsabers to her, and of course he would replace the crystals in them with blue ones. It will be weird seeing Ahsoka fight without green crystals, but at the same time, she does have a lot of cool moments in the trailer using them.

Of course, Ahsoka won't be alone in her trip to Mandalore, as Anakin gives her command of Captain Rex and a part of the 501st Legion. Yes, this explains why the two of them weren't in Revenge of the Sith, but I like the idea of the two of them fighting together one last time in one of the last battles of the war.

Also, speaking of Rex, I imagine he will have moments to shine in the season, and will also have moments of reflection on the costs of war and how many brothers he's had to see die.

Of course, another arc during this season will be the Bad Batch arc, which will deal with an experimental clone squad during a massive battle/mission for the Republic. Now, this arc was initially released around five years ago in an unreleased form, but even with that in mind, it was still one of the best arcs in the show. So even though I know exactly how the story will go, I can't wait to see how great it will look in proper animation. Who knows, maybe they'll change a few things around in the story to spice things up.

Now, this shot has me curious. This shot looks like it could be from the other unfinished arc that was released called the Crystal Crisis arc, dealing with Obi-Wan and Anakin on a mission to Utapau. Again, if that is the case, I thought that arc was superb as well, and would like to see it fully animated as well.

Of course, the trailer ends teasing the final showdown of the series, Ahsoka vs Maul. Filoni, in the panel, said this fight will be "epic," and said he even got Darth Maul actor Ray Park to motion capture Maul's moves to make it more authentic, which I think is awesome.

Now, I know some people will state how Ahsoka stands a chance against Maul, but let me remind you that Maul lost to Obi-Wan when he was a padawan, and that Maul's biggest weaknesses are his overconfidence and him underestimating his opponents. Still, I can't wait to see this fight, as to me, it represents something symbolic.

Ahsoka was the main character of the show for the most part, as she was created for the show, and while Maul obviously was around before the Clone Wars, his revival and return to the show gave him so much character and depth that wasn't in the Phantom Menace, that he can almost be an original character too. Therefore, it's a final fight pitting two of the show's most developed characters against one another.

Overall, I think the Clone Wars will knock it out of the park with its final season, as Filoni can't afford to mess it up with the chance given to him.
