DISCUSSION: Jedi Fallen Order reveal trailer
Much like Episode Nine, after months of little to no information, EA and Respawn Entertainment finally revealed their new Star Wars game, Jedi Fallen Order.
Of course, there wasn't any gameplay, as it was just a CGI trailer. But it did give us a taste of what the story and tone of the game will be, which I am a fan of.
Before I go any further, I have to address the elephant in the room...EA. EA has a ten-year exclusive games contract for the Star Wars license from 2013-2023, and in that time, they have completely failed. The only big products they have pumped out is two Battlefront games filled with controversy, while cancelling a few promising Star Wars games.
I have to point out the hypocrisy in EA, as they are promoting this game as a single-player only game with no lootboxes or microtransactions, yet have made decisions opposite of that in the past. Let's not forget how they nickled and dimed their customers in the beginning weeks of Battlefront 2, how one of their executives in the past said "single player games are dead," (Even though some of the most critically-acclaimed games in the last few years and best Star Wars games in the past were single player) and how they cancelled a Star Wars game for being single-player and not being able to monetize it. Needless to say, my confidence in the company is less than zero percent, though I do like Respawn, as they made the Titanfall games and Apex Legends, with Titanfall 2 having an excellent single-player campaign in my opinion.
Anyway, as far as the game, so far, it looks promising. You play as a surviving Jedi padawan named Cal Kestis, with the game set after the events of Order 66 and Revenge of the Sith.
In the game, Cal is set to live a normal life when an event forces him to reveal his force powers to the Empire. Yes, this sounds very similar to Kanan from Rebels, but this type of story has been done plenty of times before in Star Wars.
The trailer shows Cal with his droid companion BD-1, working with another surviving Jedi named Cere, who will act as Cal's mentor, and more importantly, fight the forces of the Empire trying to kill him.
I'll say this, Respawn has certainly done their homework, as many elements from this game are from different elements of canon, further connecting this game to the Star Wars story. One of, if not the main villain of the game will be an Inquisitor named the Second Sister. He'll also fight a different type of stormtrooper called Purge Troopers, which are specifically designed to fight force users. Th Inquisitors that hunt the surviving Jedi were first introduced in Rebels, but has since been fleshed out in different comic book series.
It's a great sense of continuity, and it makes me excited to see not only where the story of the game will go, but how it will connect to the larger Star Wars universe as a whole, because as you know, in Star Wars, everything is connected.
I don't have much to say right now because not much information is available right now. Developers have said the game will make you "feel like a Jedi" with lightsaber combat and force powers, but without actual gameplay, I can't really judge the game. Hopefully, we will see our first taste of gameplay during the annual E3 convention in June. Overall, I love the idea of a new story-driven game, I trust the developer...but I certainly don't trust the publisher. Hopefully, the publisher stays as far away from the game's development and release as possible before the game releases on Nov. 15, 2019.
