REVIEW: Star Wars Resistance "Bibo"

Eh. That's the best thing that I can say about this episode. There were things I liked about the episode, but most of it felt completely unnecessary. I know the argument is going to be the usual...kids show, lighthearted tone, etc., but even in that sense, there was hardly any development in the story of the show, and vaguely went into development with some of the characters.

Kaz and Neeku receive a part from Synara, where they discover a little creature that smells and causes trouble. Neeku immediately takes affection to it, naming it Bibo, saying that it reminds him of a pet he had when he was little.

From there, most of the first half of the episode boils down to storytelling cliches we've seen a thousand times. The pet owner that loves it no matter what. The pet acting crazy and out of control. The authority figure (Yeager) that wants the pet gone. The pet owner that threatens to not work or live there if his pet is gone.

I'm not saying that I don't appreciate the attention and different personality shift for Neeku, but it was for a storyline that has been played out so many times before.

That makes it the more frustrating when Synara's subplot involving her being a spy is only briefly addressed. Granted, there is an important development, as she is told that Kaz and Poe are members of the Resistance, which I think play a big role in future episodes.

I also like the interplay between her and Kaz, as she knows he likes her. However, I also think she is growing fond of him as well, not romantically, which I think will make it a hard choice for her when she ultimately has to choose between continuing to side with the pirates or the the Colossus.

Eventually, a giant creature is spotted and it is headed towards the Colossus. Again, much like before, if you've seen a lot of kids shows growing up, you know where the story is going...that Bibo is the child of the giant creature, who is searching for its child. It's especially frustrating when all of the other characters act like idiots and don't realize it until the very end. They even think at one point that Bibo is the creature's prey. Yes, because a thing of that size is going to mainly eat someone the size of Bibo.

One interesting thing during this sequence is that the kids from "The Children From Tehar" return. The younfer one said she has had dreams about the creature coming, like its been foreseen. That immediately makes me think that she is possibly force-sensitive, which could be another reason why the First Order and Kylo Ren destroyed their village.

Eventually, the creature attacks the station, with the Aces and Kaz working to protect it. It was a decent sequence with nice animation and great effects and sounds. Eventually, Neeku, in a nice moment, parts Bibo away to its mother. Kaz attempts to cheer him up later by presenting him with another pet...only for him to eat it, which I thought was pretty funny.

Overall, this episode was meh, average...at least to me. Like I said, it's not technically bad, as they're was nothing insulting, and again, my standards for the show are quite different than Rebels and Clone Wars. However, the episode was pretty much 90 percent filler, with only very small strides forward in the overall plot.
