REVIEW: Star Wars Resistance "Secrets and Holograms"
Last week, I said I wished the show focused more of the Aces. Well, this week, we got an episode dedicated primarily to Torra, and for the most part, I think it worked out. While her character is nothing original, it is presented, as well as this episode, in a way that was entertaining throughout.
As it turns out, Captain Doza is a little too protective of his daughter, basically never allowing her to leave her room unless she is with the Aces. So obviously, you can tell her character is someone who feels alone, trapped, and wants to explore the outside world more. If you've seen...practically any Disney film before, you'll get the gist of her character, but at the same time, it was presented, at least to me, in a way that felt compelling, and made me start to care about her more. Plus, she also has a pet that's essentially a space dog, and a freaking VR video game. Yes, I know it's labeled as a "flight simulator," but the way Kaz reacts to it, it's a video game, which, caught me by surprise to see that in Star Wars.
Meanwhile, Kaz is sent on a mission by Poe to find out Captain Doza's connections to the First Order. As it turns out, the plan for the First Order would be to essentially be a patrol unit on the ground and in the skies...which means they would eventually take it over by force.
From there, Kaz and Torra eventually meet and go on a series of adventures to get into the tower.
This is where I think most of the strength of the episode comes in for me honestly, as I think the two of them work well together. Like I've mentioned before, they are two of the youngest people on the Colossus, so naturally they would be more than willing to get along. I wouldn't mind watching a series of episodes with these two, as by the end, Torra suspects Kaz is a spy, (I mean, he's not very subtle) so I think it would be an interesting idea for the show if she found out, and either decides to go against or protect her father.
Granted, I'm thinking way down the line and speculating, but I think it would be a great idea. In the meantime, for now, I think the interactions and scenarios presented by the two in the episode were fun and charming, as the two of them have good chemistry together. Yes, I know by saying that, I'm fully aware people will be shipping these two now.
Eventually, Kaz and Torra go into an even fancier Aces lounge. Sadly, the rest of the Aces are once again either background characters or essentially small cameos. Seriously, we still haven't heard one of them speak. Also, one person we do hear speak is Rucklin from the episode "Fuel for the Fire." He works in the tower as a servant to help pay for a new racer, and vows vengeance on Kaz. While I get this is supposed to set up a rival for Kaz, the actual motivation for Rucklin is stupid.
First off, it was you who filled your ship with hyperfuel, and it was Kaz who tried, AND DID, save you, so why are you so mad at him? This was my only major complaint with the episode, as the whole basis for this future subplot is incredibly stupid.
However, one big reveal from the episode, once Kaz gets information from Doza's office, is that he was at one point a member of the Empire. Obviously, that is a huge revelation, that opens up so many interesting questions and potential scenarios for what happened to Doza.
Eventually, Torra and Kaz are stuck in, not a trash compactor, but a trash incinerator. It's a lot cooler of a machine and sequence than it sounds. The two of them are able to escape thanks to the help of BB-8, who had some funny moments this episode. As mentioned previously, the episode ends with Torra suspecting Kaz of being a spy, setting the stage for more suspense in the future.
All in all, this to me was a fun, lighthearted, and entertaining episode that was engaging, which at the same time opened up new potential or possible storylines for the future. I am invested in how the First Order storyline will play out, am interested in the whole Doza family past, as well as if Torra will play a major role in the show, other than as an Ace.
Still, if nothing else, at least we got more of a background and a personality of one of the five aces...we just need to get more development for, everybody else.
