REVIEW: Star Wars Resistance "Synara's Score"
This may sound weird, but this episode felt almost exactly like the second episode of the series, "The Triple Dark." By that, I found the first half of the episode very slow paced, followed by an entertaining second half with a pirate attack, though, due to the first half, with not that much investment.
The episode starts off more intense than others, as team fireball is tasked by Captain Doza to fix the targeting computer on the station's cannons, as Doza is wisely worried about another pirate attack, considering Synara is on the ship now as a spy.
Kaz and Tam go to meet Synara in the dock levels to get a part they need for the cannons. The first ten minutes just kind of meanders by with unfunny sequences from Neeku and Kaz. Eventually, they get the part they need, and Tam and Synara have a conversation about Tam's past.
It's a nice conversation, and I am intrigued with her past, however, I feel like their conversation feels out of place. The focus of the episode is about the impending pirate attack, and the attack itself, making their talk almost feel like an afterthought, thinking, oh shit, we need some kind of emotional moment from the episode.
This also leads Tam to try and rescue Synara during the attack, which I thought was kind of far-fetched, as they only met for the first time that day, and maybe had a half-hour to an hour conversation. So to me, I didn't buy that Tam would risk her life for her, and that they are already friends.
However, I can also see the flip side of the argument, in that Tam feels a connection to her, as they are both outsiders. I can also see their relationship blossom, in that, she will convince Synara to turn her back from the pirates in the future.
I may be thinking too much into this, but I want to believe that's why they put those moments in the episode.
From there, the second half of the episode shows the pirate attack, and it's more entertaining than the "The Triple Dark" attack. Granted, since it's a kid's show, they can't go that over-the-top with the action and destruction, and the pirates act like complete nitwits, but the extended sequence is still the best part of the episode, with a highlight being an action sequence involving Kaz, Yeager, and two pirates.
Eventually, Kaz and Yeager fix the cannons, causing the pirates to once again retreat, though Synara remains on the station, possibly forming a connection to Tam in the process.
The end of the episode also ends like "The Triple Dark," in that, the First Order appears again. This time, Doza speaks to Pyre and said he is interested in discussing the proposal made by the First Order. Once again, the episode ends on the most intriguing scenario, as its seems the First Order's plan is working to perfection. Thought, my question is, if they gain control of the Colossus, what would they do to it, and why do they want the station so badly in the first place?
Overall, I liked the episode just slightly more than "The Triple Dark," though both shared the same complaints. I didn't find this episode as annoying, and the action scenes are much better, but at the same time, the first half drags, the relationship between Tam and Synara feels forced to me, for now, and the episode doesn't get real interesting until the very end. Still, the ending of the episode makes me think the First Order will have a much more extended part in the show going forward, which I believe will be a good thing.
