REVIEW: Star Wars Resistance Extended Sneak Peek Trailer
Well, that was certainly...better. I'll admit, the first teaser trailer of Star Wars Resistance wasn't that great, as it really didn't give that much of look into the overall story and what to expect from the series. Therefore, I can say this extended trailer, at least, gives a better picture at what the show will be like, as far as tone, action, and story. Am I excited for the show? Yes and no. I still have a lot of concerns, but I am more intrigued by this trailer, and be extension the show, than the last one. As always, here are a few shots and moments from the trailer and what I think of them.
One thing that I am looking forward to seeing is the New Republic, as it appears the main character Kazuda, or Kaz, was a member of the New Republic fleet before joining the Resistance by Poe. Outside of the new novels, the New Republic has not really been seen or featured in the new films, as it was briefly shown in The Force Awakens before being obliterated, and was only mentioned in The Last Jedi. Therefore, any screentime with the New Republic, no matter how brief, would be a good thing.
We also get more shots in the trailer detailing Kaz's mission as a spy for the Resistance, as he is shown going undercover against the First Order, as well as trying to figure out who is a spy for the First Order as well. This will be the main overarching plot, at least for the first season, so I hope that it is handled well, and makes the First Order feel like a threat to the galaxy on the brink of war.
We also get to see what Kaz will do in his down time, or at least, to act as cover for his true mission. He will be racer, mechanic, and defender for the fueling station, the Colossus. Obviously, there is going to be "crazy shenanigans" in store.
Throughout the last couple weeks, up until this trailer, Lucasfilm has been showcasing some of the other characters that we will see in the trailer, and this is where some of my concerns for the show become apparent, minus the character models. Granted, you can't judge a character from their first look, but a lot of the characters from the trailer appears the be cliche, bland, or has the potential to be annoying. I know a lot of the cast who voiced by people that were in comedy, and again, I know that this show is directed for kids who will enjoy this, but I hope at least the characters are more than one note, and have development to them.
Of course, it wouldn't be Star Wars without action, and the trailer showcases action through races, stealth and infiltration missions, and fights against pirates and the First Order. What I found interesting is that some of the characters appear to help Kaz on his missions, so I wonder if the other characters will help him on his journey.
We knew going in that Phasma, Poe, and BB-8 would be in the show, but it was officially revealed the General Leia herself will appear in the show, which is a good thing, and I can't wait to see her interactions on the show.
We also got our first look at Phasma as well in the new trailer, which means I was completely wrong about who the new gold-plated trooper was from the first trailer. Maybe he will be a new villain for Kaz to fight. Also, we see Phasma take part in action scenes, and my hope is that she is threatening, has more development, and is not a throw-away villain that gets defeated every episode.
Can this be a conformation that Kylo Ren will be in the series? I mean, it is a shuttle that was used by him in the sequel trilogy, so it's possible.
Overall, I'm going into this show with both no real expectations, as well as an open-mind at the same time. The character models still look off to me, the humor and tone has me concerned, but at the same time, I can see some entertaining, as well as lore-building elements to the show as well. It will probably be a safe and fun show for kids, and for adults, I would say give it a chance before judging it. Still, I won't go easy on the show as well.
