REVIEW: Star Wars Rebels "Dume"
Obviously, when a major event happens that appeared in the previous episode, you need to have the characters recover. That's basically the goal of this episode, have each of the characters react, in their own way, to what transpired before, as well as set up the final major arc of the show. Each character has their own little journey, so that's how I'll separate this review.
But first, let's talk about Pryce and Thrawn. Pryce mad a major gamble. While she did end of killing Kanan, she basically caused the entire factory to be shut down, causing a halt to Thrawn's Tie Defender project. Which, was the main goal of the rebels to begin with. It's how you say, irony at its fullest. Obviously, Thrawn sees right through Pryce, specifically when she wants to have a parade to celebrate Kanan's death. It makes you wonder why he even allows her to do anything. Despite that, Thrawn is as cold and menacing as ever when he threatens to take care of her when he returns. Yeah, Thrawn is one of only a few people in the galaxy you don't ever want to piss off and get on their bad side. The others obviously being the Emperor and Vader.
Now, since Hera loved him, she probably took Kanan's death the hardest. She has trouble going on, blaming herself for getting him involved in this rebellion. She even makes a sad statement saying she was the one who was blind. The sad thing is, it's Chopper that gets through to her to help her move forward. Cudos to you Chop, I guess deep down in the all the circuits and sass, you have a heart after all.
In the end, Hera gains to strength to move on, based on Kanan's actions, and decides to add a piece to her Kalikori to remember Kanan, her family. I'm sorry, I can only handle so many feels at one moment.
While Hera mainly had grief, Sabine and Zeb deal with Kanan's death through anger and revenge, and want to immediately strike back at the Empire. I got to say, I loved how Zeb offered a shoulder for Ezra to cry on. It shows how deeply the Ghost crew care for each other. Eventually, Sabine and Zeb attract the attention of Rukh, who challenges them to a 2 on 1 fight.
Not wanting to be outdone, Rukh reveals his predator mode on his suit. I'm serious, his suit turns invisible like the predator, and the only way to see him is through infrared technology. This leads to a very interesting fight where they are able to subdue him through...paint. Yeah, Sabine throws a paint bomb on him. Why not use a regular bomb?
Eventually, Zeb begins to beat the crap out of Rukh until Sabine tells him to stop. Um, I know it would be in cold blood and not, kid friendly, but why not kill him. It would strike a major blow to the Empire on Lothal. Instead, you paint him, and send him back to the Empire. Ok, while I liked the arc the two of them went on, I thought it was a stupid decision to let him go free.
Meanwhile, Ezra pretty much deals with Kanan's loss through fear. He is unsure of his path and what to do now. This leads him to having another connection with the Lothwolves, and eventually, a giant one named Dume. Ok I already have a fan theory that Kanan is reincarnated as the giant wolf. To be honest, the wolves are still a major mystery on how they are connected with the force.
Anyway, the giant wolf speaks to Ezra, as he is able to communicate more than the other wolves. He tells Ezra there is danger ahead and that he feels fear with him. He also says to fight together, return to the Jedi Temple on Lothal, and in direct quotes, or words: "Secrets, knowledge, destruction, restore past, redeem future." Yeah, a lot of guessing is needed to interpret what that all means.
Obviously, the answers that Ezra, as well as we as the audience, will be revealed in the temple, but what those answers are could be anybody's guess. I still think Ahsoka is involved, and I still think Kanan will play a part in some way. I truly wonder what the final journey Filoni has for Ezra. With all this foreshadowing and mystery, it better be something that changes the whole landscape and mythos of the franchise for good.
So yeah, this was mainly a quiet and set-up episode, but that is exactly what was needed. With five episodes left, the final arc of the show is set. Ezra's journey will come full-circle in the temple, while the remainder of the Ghost crew and their allies will fight to finally liberate Lothal. The end is near for the show, but will this be the end of the many characters we've grown attached to? As the giant lothwolf explains, we will soon find knowledge ahead.
