REVIEW: Kyuranger 15

After I got so excited about last week’s good filler episode, I found myself promptly let down by Kyuranger this week with a dull plot and misplaced priorities. There’s nothing wrong with a simple plot; last week’s episode was quite simple but was delivered so well that it didn’t matter. This was another boring toku filler story. (And yes, I may be too critical, but Kyuranger has set the bar rather high.)

What could have become a silly beach episode turned into a story of miscommunication among ignorant village dwellers. Hammy did receive some welcomed development, in the form of some backstory (a very positive message for girls to speak up) and by displaying some of her ninja moves. Raptor was finally(!) placed on a mission but still suffered from a lack of screen time; she and Spada were mainly working behind the scenes while Naga was being a (charming) bumbling fool and Hammy and Lucky were escorting what appeared the be the only girl on the planet Vela.

The world building in this episode was disappointing; before the gang went to Earth, the places that they visited seemed vibrant and unique. This was a very low budget planet in comparison. The Loch Ness Malistrate Gonessy and his big fight was nothing to write home about and overall I spent my time during this episode just waiting for the next side scene showing Scorpio.

The side story of Champ and Stinger was more exciting, but very brief. This, however, is not something that bothered me too much because I know next week’s episode is going to be full of delicious revenge action. I won’t judge Kyuranger on one dull episode, but this makes me grateful that most of the episodes so far have been either character-driven or part of the overall story. Filler episodes are bound to be hit or miss, but I better not see too many of them in a row.
