REVIEW: Kyuranger 14
The gang are on a special mission to the Space Ryugu Palace, where Garu, Hammy, Balance, and Naga are supposed to distract malistrate Ewteljan with luxuries while Lucky and Spada save the malistrate’s prisoners. This is a Garu episode, in which we’re supposed to feel bad for him because he keeps getting unlucky at the Kyulette Chance. Which is weird, because before this episode he had three more picks that Raptor – who had zero! Granted, Garu hasn’t been given much love since the first episode so I still appreciated the focus on him.
This was one of the first true filler episodes in weeks and it gives filler a good name. This was the funniest episode in recent memory, with everyone given their gimmick and nearly every joke on point. Garu’s shtick was that he was unlucky…until the malistrate Ewteljan falls in love with him. I find the cross dressing gimmick tiring, but the fact that Ewteljan asked Garu out on a date before Garu killed him was pretty funny.
Balance and Naga once again had a great episode, and with Champ out of the picture (on his mission with Stinger) they are my current number ones. Their chemistry is wonderful and thankfully hasn't faded at all. Their quirks haven't either - like Balance fighting while carrying loot from the Palace on his back. They have a distinct partnership, but still work well within the group. In fact, this was another episode that highlighted the ever-improving teamwork between all of the Kyurangers.
My favorite scene was the climax, when the shots alternated between Garu’s dreamy dancing and Spada and Lucky’s fight, interlaced with Lucky pep-talking Garu. Everything was well (and hilariously) choreographed, and the music choice was excellent.
There's really not more discuss about this episode. While it was a great example of filler, nothing of real consequence occurred. Garu received some well-appreciated screen time while Raptor is still stuck behind the scenes. Let her warrior dreams come true, Kyuranger! She better fight in the next episode or else I'll be very disappointed.
