Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Midseason Trailer
Just like last season, Star Wars Rebels got a midseason trailer for the rest of season 3. Like last season's midseason trailer, it is amazing. However, for this trailer, at least from what I've seen, they seem to be addressing issues that I have been having with the show for awhile.
Like the last couple of Rebels trailers, I won't go over every single frame, rather, some of the more noteworthy moments that caught my attention, and there were a lot. One of the bigger things is that Saw Guerrera from Rogue One will be making an appearance and will be voiced by Forest Whitaker himself. I am excited to see him and his arc on the show, though I don't expect him to be on a lot. However, the fact that they are connecting everything together from the comics, TV shows, and movies is a real-exciting prospect. Plus, Mon Mothma said in Rogue One that Saw was once an ally of the Rebellion before he broke ties with them. I'm hoping we can see this being played out over this season or beyond.
Speaking of Mon Mothma, she is going to make an appearance as well, which again, makes sense. She has a line in the trailer speaking to rebel cell leaders that they are forming an organized rebellion. My hope, that by season's end, we will see all rebel cells from across the galaxy come together and officially form the Rebel Alliance. That would be an amazing thing to see.
So, right off the bat, one of my complaints appears to be answered, that is, actually show the rebel alliance come together, not go off on supply missions with a pig. I'm sorry, I'll never get over that episode.
Yes, those appear to be death troopers from Rogue One guarding Thrawn. Yeah, the Empire is not going to go down without a fight. From what we see from Thrawn, he finally means business. He's harsher, more brutal, wanting to "total defeat" not a surrender. Hell, we even see him at one point fight off a group of Imperial security droids. Whether it's a practice training session or if he is fighting off reprogrammed droids, it's still badass either way. I mean, Thrawn was always known in the old continuity as a cold, calculating strategist, but I never took him as an actual fighter.
It is also revealed that he knows that the Imperial spy is named Fulcrum, so, Kallus, you better watch your back, because Thrawn is coming. This also appears to answer another one of my problems with the show, being Thrawn not doing another.
There is going to be a lot of space battles this half season judging from the trailer as we see a full complete rebel fleet engaging an Imperial fleet with new fighters, the Tie Defenders! Yes, old canon fans, they are canon again!
Another big subplot from this season being continued is Sabine and Mandalore. The last we saw Sabine, she retrieved the darksaber from Maul. Now, she will have to use that influence plus all her training to convince the people of Mandalore to join the rebellion. Now, the Mandalorian stuff has been pretty hit or miss for me with me also saying that it has potential. From what I'm seeing, I'm hoping that potential will pay off now. For one thing, we actually see Sabine getting lightsaber training from Kanan, which is amazing. We also see the rebels talk to what appears to be Mandalore rebels saying that they need to speak with Sabine's mom. We might actually see her this season. We also see Sabine in more cool looking action scenes including a lightsaber duel with Gar Saxon. I really want to love all this stuff with Mandalore and it has all the potential in the world. Please, please, don't be a let down.
Finally, at the end of the trailer, THEY CONFIRMED IT! We see Maul come face to face, and fight on Tatooine, Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi. Yes, the final rematch is going to happen. Now, I must say that this is probably going to be the season finale. Now, some people may ask what would be the point of bringing Maul back if he is only going to on a few episodes and most likely get killed by Obi-wan? If were looking at it from the perspective of his appearances on rebels, than yeah, it would seem like a gimmick. However, if you look at it from all the total appearances of Maul, from the Phantom Menace, the Clone Wars, and other media, than it makes the character's tragic journey come full circle to be maybe defeated by the man who has haunted him for years and on the planet where his journey in the saga began. That's where I stand on that. Plus, the lightsaber duel and the idea of seeing Obi-Wan on screen again are going to be epic.
So yeah, I'm pretty pumped for the rest of this season. It has the potential to make the show darker, improve on faults of the show, explore new and old storylines, and tie multiple elements of the saga together. Could it all fall apart? Yes. However, I'm willing to remain hopeful because like rebellions, wanting your favorite shows to be good is built on hope.
