Star Wars The Force Awakens - Trailer 3
Me before watching this new trailer...I hope it turns out good. Me after watching this new trailer...hsdfhahsfufg...YES, YES, YES! Seriously, this is how you do a trailer. Showing enough detail to keep everyone intrigued without giving everything away. Like the second Star Wars Rebels trailer, I won't break it down frame by frame; rather, what were the memorable parts...which were a lot.
The trailer opens up with Rey, who is portrayed by Daisy Ridley, examining the wreckage of the crashed star destroyer on Jakku. She also appears frequently throughout the trailer looking beyond the planet and later teaming up with Finn, John Boyega's character, and Han Solo. I am interested to see what is going to happen to her in this movie. It is obvious that in the beginning she will start out a smuggler and how she meets Finn will take her on a grand journey. Many have speculated that she is Han and Leia's daughter, although we'll have to wait and see. There is a voiceover in the trailer that asks her who she is with her response being she doesn't know.
Speaking of Finn, he has a big focus in this trailer as well. We see him in his TIE Fighter crashing on Jakku and during the trailer he says that he was born to do one thing but is now questioning what his purpose is. As I mentioned in my Finn theory article, I believe he will abandon the First Order and join the Resistance and start to become a Jedi. This trailer supports that theory as well giving him new shots fighting the Order, and brandishing a lightsaber.
We also see more glimpses of the Resistance as well, who take their cue from the old Rebel Alliance in that they seem like a rag-tag group of fighters fighting for a common goal. It also proves that J.J. Abrams got a lot of extras for the film, because I can tell the number of people that is going to be in this movie will be huge.
Another character of focus will be the main antagonist, Kylo Ren. He is the one that is holding the Darth Vader mask from the second trailer. Yeah, he is a Vader fanboy to say the least. He wears a mask just like him and says this line in the trailer: "I will finish what you started." It is obvious that he worships Vader and the Sith and is trying to carry on their lineage of the dark side and destroying the Jedi and the Resistance. He looks badass in the film and we see more shots of the First Order military, including Captain Phasma.
One thing of note of the movie from this trailer is that the film looks absolutely beautiful. Abrams knows how how to make great technical looking films. The recent Star Trek films are examples of that. The mix of pratical effects and CGI is perfect and the way the lighting and effects sound effects are great as well. The revamped music from John Williams is the cherry on top. This trailer, and most likely the movie, will be a visual treat for our senses. In this shot in particular, what is this giant robot thing and where is this mysterious place that Han is showing us?
Another thing of note from this trailer is that it is action-packed. Not only due the shots and scenery in this movie look astounding, but also do the fights. Many are wondering if the First Order is making another death star or not, but regardless there are plenty of shots of dogfights between X-Wings and TIEs, battles in the rain and on the ground, and fights in space as well.
Here are my other thoughts of the film. We got our first appearance of Leia as she was seen being comforted by Han. Honestly, the only returning characters we haven't seen as C-3PO and Luke. 3PO is not as important to see but I guess my only dissapointment with the new trailer is that we didn't see Luke. In fact, we haven't seen Luke at all in any of the marketing for the film, unless you count that leaked set photo of Mark Hamill. How much of a role is he going to have in the movie?
I also liked whenever Rey asked Han if the stories they heard were true to which he says everything is...the dark side and the Jedi. He sure has come a long way since saying Hokey Religions and ancient weapons are not much for a blaster. The trailer ends with a glimpse of Finn and Kylo Ren about to get into a lightsaber duel, which I'm sure is going to be awesome. Overall, yeah, except not seeing Luke, this trailer was incredible. I simply cannot wait to see this movie, it is truly going to be a once-and-a-lifetime experience.
